A 15-year-old boy was electrocuted while trying to remove a tarpaulin from a straw-laden lorry at Ellaipatti in Dindigul district on Friday (September 18, 2026). In a separate incident, a 52-year-old man was killed after his hut was gutted by fire in Sukkamedu in Dindigul district.

According to the police, the straw-laden truck had come to Ellaipatti from Thanjavur. The straw was covered in tarpaulin. To unload the straw, the tarpaulin was being removed when it reportedly got stuck.

Periyakaruppan, 15, climbed atop the truck to release the tarpaulin. He was electrocuted when a power line snapped and fell on him. He was thrown to the ground in the impact of the electric shock, suffered severe burn injuries and died on the spot. The truck was gutted in a fire.

On receiving information, Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Dindigul arrived at the spot. Sanarpatti police recovered the boy’s body and sent it to Government Dindigul Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem. The investigation is under way.

In a separate incident, Ravi, 52, was killed after a fire broke out in his hut in Sukkamedu. The hut was gutted in the fire. The police are investigating to ascertain the reason for the fire.
