Twenty persons travelling on a tourist bus were injured after the vehicle crashed along the Coonoor-Mettupalayam Road near Kattery Park in The Nilgiris on Wednesday evening.
According to police, 26 tourists from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh came to Udhagamandalam and Coonoor for sight-seeing. The incident occurred when they were returning to Coimbatore, where they were scheduled to board a train back to Visakhapatnam.
After the incident, locals, police and Fire and Rescue Service personnel rushed to help the injured. Most passengers suffered only minor injuries, and were taken to Coonoor for treatment. However, the driver, identified as Seenu, got trapped inside the wreckage, and it took the rescuers over an hour to get him out. He suffered serious injuries and was referred to Coimbatore for further treatment.
Of the injured, 14 were admitted to a hospital for treatment. The others were treated for minor injuries and discharged.
