Carvalho at Lalbagh: R-Day flower show to celebrate the life and works of K.P. Poornachandra Tejaswi

Lalbagh Botanical Garden will host its annual Republic Day flower show from January 15 to 26, with this edition paying tribute to the life and literary legacy of celebrated Kannada writer and thinker K.P. Poornachandra Tejaswi.

The theme has been chosen with the objective of familiarising younger audiences and visitors from outside the State with Tejaswi’s work and commemorating more than 45 years since the publication of his iconic novel Carvalho, Horticulture Department officials said. 

“To ensure that the theme is reflected meaningfully in the floral installations, the department is reaching out to literary scholars, writers and others closely familiar with Tejaswi’s life and work. Their inputs will help in conceptualising displays that go beyond decorative value and narrate aspects of the author’s ideas, characters and worldview, making the experience more informative for students and first-time readers,” M. Jagadeesh, Joint Director of Horticulture (Parks & Gardens) at Lalbagh Botanical Garden, told The Hindu.  

Officials highlighted that Tejaswi’s writing continues to resonate across generations because of its creative writing style, scientific temper, and deep engagement with nature and society. His books are still widely read, not just in Karnataka but also by readers from outside the State. Carvalho, in particular, has attracted attention as a Kannada science fiction novel that blends scientific inquiry with the ecology of the Western Ghats. The novel traces a scientist’s search for a flying lizard, a narrative that has remained relevant for its imaginative approach and remains one of Tejaswi’s most discussed works. 

Mr. Jagadeesh added that the department is currently finalising the budget and working on new design concepts to avoid repetition and to draw greater interest, particularly from younger visitors. “Along with the traditional display of seasonal flowers, efforts are being made to source new and rare varieties from different parts of the country and select international locations. These will be showcased through innovative layouts and thematic structures so that visitors have a fresh visual experience rather than a mere change in theme,” he said.  

This year’s flower show will also be the first to be held after the introduction of electric bicycles and tricycles within Lalbagh. The officials attached to the park said that this is expected to enhance visitor experience while also generating additional revenue for the department.
