The Crime Branch CID on Friday arrested the Inspector of District Crime Branch, Thanjavur, Sugumaran in the wake of allegations that he had extorted money in a dispute between two partners of a private hospital in Thanjavur under the pretext of bringing out a settlement between them.

The investigating agency of Thanjavur unit conducted a search lasting several hours at the residence of the Inspector at Thanjavur and conducted detailed inquiries before arresting him at night, said police sources.

The Inspector, who reportedly complained of chest pain, was admitted to the Thanjavur Medical College and Hospital, said police sources.  The CB-CID took up the case based on a direction from the Director-General of Police and Head of the Police force in September acting on a complaint from one of the partners.

Sources said a dispute reportedly over ownership broke out between two partners of the hospital from 2025 onwards. Three cases were registered by the jurisdictional police then in this connection earlier in Thanjavur.

The allegation against the Inspector was that he had extorted huge amounts of money from one of the partners under the pretext of mediation and bringing about a settlement.

The CB-CID seized some documents during the house search and subsequently brought him to their office in Thanjavur where he was questioned in detail before arresting him, the sources added.
