Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy on Friday announced that the Centre has approved construction of two lakh houses in Telangana under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) during the financial year 2026-27.
Describing it as a significant step towards providing dignified housing to rural families, Mr. Reddy said the allocation was made under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the Centre’s commitment to the “Housing for All” mission.
In a statement, the Union Minister said Telangana could not benefit from the PMAY-G scheme for several years because the previous BRS government, led by former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, had not participated in the PMAY-G Awas Survey conducted in 2018. As a result, the State was left without a list of eligible beneficiaries required for implementation of the scheme, he claimed.
Mr. Reddy said that after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government assumed office for a third consecutive term at the Centre, he wrote to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy in August 2024 highlighting the issue and seeking measures to address the gap. According to him, the Chief Minister acknowledged the previous government’s non-participation in the survey and sought his intervention for securing housing allocations for Telangana.
The Union Minister said he subsequently took up the matter with Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, urging the Centre to consider Telangana’s case on a special basis. He said a series of official communications and meetings were held to secure housing sanctions for the State’s rural population. Expressing gratitude to Mr. Chouhan for his support, Mr. Reddy said the approval of two lakh houses would help fulfil the dream of home ownership for thousands of economically weaker rural families.
