Ramanathapuram Chamber of Commerce has appealed to Union Railway Minister for providing stoppage at Ramanathapuram railway station on both directions for the proposed Rameswaram-Chennai Egmore Vande Bharat Express.

In a petition, its president, B. Jagadeesan and general secretary, Gupta R. Govindarajan, said that Ramanathapuram was the district headquarters and served as an important administrative, commercial, educational, medical and transportation centre for large population of the district and adjoining areas.

With substantial passenger movement towards Chennai from Ramanathapuram for various needs, including employment and education, exclusion of Ramanathapuram railway station from the list of stoppages for the proposed Vande Bharat express would cause considerable inconvenience to large section of the travelling public, the chamber said.

Ramanathapuram railway station was the second most important railway station in the district after Rameswaram, both in terms of passenger utilisation and revenue contribution to the Indian Railway.

Renowned temples like Tirupullani, Uthirakosamangai and a holy dargah were located closer to the Ramanathapuram railway station.

Besides, this station would provide convenient access to Ram Setu and Sethukarai for the pilgrims and tourists.

Besides, the proposed new airport would also come closer to this railway station.

Besides, Rameswaram railway station, from where the proposed train is to originate and terminate, was 60 km away from Ramanathapuram railway station, the association said.
