The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has collected ₹6.60 lakh in fines from 120 Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) for violating Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, in 40 days till Tuesday. The Corporation has also directed all BWGs to register on its portal and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board portal, and comply with the rules.
Under the rules, buildings with a built-up area of 20,000 sq.m. or more, institutions consuming at least 40,000 litres of water a day or establishments generating solid waste of 100 kg or more a day are classified as BWGs. A release said corporate offices, hotels, hospitals, educational institutions, IT parks, marriage halls, malls, markets, and resident welfare associations are among those covered.
Around 90% of BWGs within the GCC limits had already registered, while the remaining establishments were asked to register immediately. Violators would face fines ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹25,000, and further enforcement action for continued violations, the release said.
BWGs were directed to segregate waste at source using colour-coded bins and process bio-degradable waste within their premises through composting, biogas, or other approved methods. Dry, sanitary, and special-care waste must be handed over separately to the GCC or authorised agencies, it added.
They must maintain records of waste generation, processing, transportation, and disposal and submit details every three months through the GCC and CPCB portals. Staff and campaigners will assist establishments with registration, the statement said.
