Chennai Corporation to strictly enforce construction waste guidelines from Dec. 22

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced that new construction guidelines for clean and safe building practices will be rigorously enforced from December 22.

According to a press release, the guidelines, which were first implemented across all GCC zones on May 21, mandate that all construction materials, excavated soil, building debris, and waste must be stored within the construction site premises.

Yet, many violations have been observed in various construction projects, including apartment complexes, commercial buildings, and educational institutions, causing disruption to pedestrian and vehicular traffic, the release added.

The dumping of such materials on public roads, sidewalks, or road verges is strictly prohibited and will attract penalties ranging from ₹25,000 for buildings between 500 to 20,000 square metres, and ₹5 lakh for buildings exceeding 20,000 square metres. Construction materials for smaller buildings (below 500 square metres) should be managed responsibly without obstructing sidewalks or roadways, the release said.
