Midnight services were held at the churches in Thanjavur on Wednesday midnight wherein the believers welcomed the New Year.

A ‘Thanks Giving’ mass preceded the Midnight Mass ceremony at almost all the churches wherein the Assistant Parish Priests conducted the ‘Thanks Giving’ Mass ceremonies and the Parish Priests the Midnight Mass. Masses were held at churches belonging to non-Catholic denominations also.

Apart from the ritualistic New Year celebrations with distribution of cakes at the places of worships of Christians, public gathered in sizeable numbers near the Ayyasamy Vandaiyar Memorial Bus Stand (Old Bus Stand) on Gandhiji Road near the Thanjavur Railway Junction and near the New Bus Stand on Tiruchi Road around midnight to welcome the New Year.

Elaborate security arrangements by the police resulted in minimising the number of bursting of crackers to welcome the New Year as the revellers were warned not to burst crackers as part of the New Year’s Eve.

On Thursday, major temples in and around Thanjavur received a steady inflow of believers right from dawn as the devotees worshipped the main deities of the respective temples by offering flowers and other puja material invoking the blessing of the God, sources said.
