The Coimbatore Corporation on Friday (October 2) organised the final of ‘Kolam Star-2026’ at the Semmozhi Poonga campus in Gandhipuram to spread awareness on segregation of waste into four categories.

The final was held among 100 participants selected through ward-level competitions held across the Corporation’s five zones and 100 wards. The participants drew kolams highlighting the segregation of dry waste, wet waste, special waste and sanitary waste.

Jennifer of Ward 40 in the West Zone, Sumithra of Ward 85 and Harini of Ward 96 in the South Zone, and Suganya of Ward 2 and Bhuvaneshwari of Ward 26 in the North Zone won the first five prizes. Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja distributed the prizes. All participants were given saplings.

The Corporation also recognised wards for sanitation and mosquito-control measures. Ward 88 in the South Zone received the ‘Dengue Free Champion’ award for removing 17,070 items that could serve as mosquito-breeding sources during the previous week. Ward 69 in the Central Zone was selected as the best ward for sanitation and mosquito-control work.

Mr. Ravi Teja urged the participants to continue spreading awareness on waste segregation among residents in their respective areas. He also appealed to residents to inspect rainwater-harvesting structures at their houses and repair any defects before the monsoon to conserve rainwater and recharge groundwater.
