Coimbatore Corporation is planning to take up measures to improve and maintain basic amenities, including toilets and the children’s play area, at the Race Course walking track.

The move follows a recent inspection of the walking track by Backward Classes Welfare Minister V. Sampath Kumar, who directed the Corporation to take up repair and maintenance works at the facility.

Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja also inspected the toilet and the surface parking facility near the Thomas Park junction and instructed officials to ensure that the facilities were maintained properly.

Officials said saplings had been planted around the parking facility as part of efforts to improve its surroundings. The one-acre facility, located behind the 108 Vinayagar Temple near Thomas Park junction, was constructed by the Corporation at a cost of ₹99 lakh and can accommodate around 120 cars.

The parking facility has remained underutilised, with vehicles continuing to be parked along the roadside near Thomas Park junction and the Media Tower stretch. To discourage roadside parking, the Corporation, in coordination with the police, has recently placed traffic cones along the stretch and installed information boards directing motorists to use the designated parking facility.

At the children’s play area, the Corporation plans to replace play equipment and take up painting and other maintenance works. Officials said the measures were aimed at improving the facilities used by walkers and children at Race Course.
