Coimbatore Corporation to identify construction debris collection sites zone-wise

Coimbatore Corporation plans to identify construction debris collection sites zone-wise to manage construction waste disposal in the city.

Earlier, proposals to establish construction debris collection sites in each zone were not implemented after concerns were raised in areas where locations were identified, particularly over dust becoming a daily hazard. As a result, the Corporation did not proceed with the sites and is now working on identifying alternative spaces zone-wise.

Under the earlier plan, the Corporation had identified temporary construction debris collection points in all zones, including locations at Singanallur in the East Zone, Balaji IOB Colony in the West Zone, the Tamil Nadu Housing Board layout at Vellakinar in the North Zone, and a shared site for the South and Central Zones at Pullukadu. These were intended to function until a centralised construction and demolition waste processing facility was established.

The Corporation had planned a construction and demolition waste processing plant at the Vellalore dumpyard. The project, proposed in 2023, progressed up to the tender stage, but did not move forward thereafter.

Officials said the absence of designated dumping spaces continued to pose challenges in regulating construction waste disposal. Construction debris, including concrete waste, was being dumped along roadsides and into drains, blocking water runoff. The waste was also being used to refill low-lying areas. Fines ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹1 lakh were being imposed on concrete lorries and other violators, officials said.

Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran said resolutions passed by the council to establish dumping sites were later cancelled last year, and the civic body was now planning to identify debris collection sites zone-wise to manage construction waste without causing pollution or hazards.
