In an effort toward complete transparency and accountability in dairy farming, Madurai District Collector Nishanth Krishna inaugurated a digital initiative to monitor milk procurement process here on Monday.
The district administration, in collaboration with Aavin and the Department of Dairy Development, rolled out a pilot project that introduces spot acknowledgement slips and automated WhatsApp updates for Primary Cooperative Milk Producers’ Societies.
The initiative fulfills the legislative announcement made by the Minister for Milk and Dairy Development C. Vijayalakshmi.
Designed to establish an end-to-end automated framework from dairy farms to the final procurement stage, the system significantly enhances traceability and ensures that operations remain clear and verifiable at every level, said officials.
Starting from Monday, (October 5) primary societies across Madurai district will instantly receive digital details—including milk quantity, quality metrics such as fat and solid-not-fat (SNF) contents, and society code numbers—directly through printed spot slips and real-time WhatsApp notifications sent to society administrators’ mobile phones.
Officials highlighted that this transparent digital loop guarantees that the government’s quality-based enhanced procurement prices (up to ₹44 per litre) reach both the cooperative societies and individual milk producers directly without discrepancies.
The specialised software powering this service was engineered by M.S. Karthikeyan and M. Kavinash Dharman, third-year Information Technology (IT) students at Sethu Institute of Technology, working under the expert mentorship of the Sethu Incubation Council.
Operating under Tamil Nadu’s three-tier cooperative framework, the Madurai District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (Aavin) oversees 629 primary milk producers’ cooperative societies at village level.
These societies collectively procure roughly 1,41,000 litres of milk daily, ensuring an an uninterrupted supply for consumers across the district while securing the livelihoods of local farmers, officials added.
The programme was attended by Madurai Aavin General Manager T. Muthumadhavan, alongside senior cooperative department officials, government representatives, and members of primary milk producers’ societies.ds
