Congress workers will take out a 100-km long padayatra from Sullia to Mulky in Dakshina Kannada from February 9 to February 12 demanding repealing of Viksit Bharath Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Act and restoration of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.

Talking to reporters here on Thursday, Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee President K. Harish Kumar said the padayatra will cover 25 km daily. At the end of the daily padayatra, there will be a public meeting. These meetings will be held at Kumbra, Mani, Farangipet and Mulky. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Ministers Dinesh Gundu Rao, Krishna Byre Gowda, Santosh Lad and Priyank Kharge will participate in the public programme.

The Central Government, Mr. Kumar alleged, did a big blunder by removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name and bringing in a new law VB-G RAM G Act. With the new law, Mr. Kumar alleged, the Central Government will take total control over the works being taken up and Gram Panchayat will have no say in it. Unlike the earlier MNREGA, the Central Government has reduced its share of contribution to 60% and raised share of the state government to 40%.

MLC Ivan D’Souza also spoke.
