The Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee on Friday organised a protest seeking resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in the wake of media report showing his alleged arbitrary conduct, including decisions on implementation of Special Intensive Revision exercise in the country.
The workers led by former Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy, Member of Parliament and PPCC chief V. Vaithilingam staged the protest near Indira Gandhi Statue. They raised slogans seeking the resignation of Mr. Kumar and demanding accountability from the part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the protest, Mr. Narayanasamy said around 13 crore voters have been removed from the electoral roll through SIR. The media report showed that the other two election commissioners have given written objections, at least 14 times over the last 10 months, he said.
“This shows that the CEC was taking decisions on his own. The Congress party had questioned the results of Assembly elections in Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, and Haryana. An investigation should be conducted by the Supreme Court on the role of Prime Minister, Home Minister and CEC on the conduct of Assembly polls,” he said.
