A Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] worker was seriously injured on Tuesday after an explosive went off in his hand at Pinarayi in the district.
The injured, Vipin Raj, sustained severe damage to his right hand and was rushed to a private hospital in Kannur.
The CPI(M) claimed that the incident occurred when an ‘Olapadakkam’ (fire cracker) brought for victory celebration accidentally exploded.
The blast took place around 2.30 p.m. at a deserted stretch near a canal at Venduttayi in Pinarayi, raising suspicions.
Crude bombs seized
Meanwhile, the Congress alleged that the CPI(M) was engaged in widespread bomb making to use them in areas, including Panur. Two crude bombs were reportedly recovered from Panur earlier. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) leaders accused the CPI(M) and the police of shielding the perpetrators and criticised, what they described as, a party culture that encouraged violence.
Political tension continued in the Panur-Paratt region for the fourth consecutive day on Tuesday, with cyber groups allegedly owing allegiance to the CPI(M) posting on social media threatening messages and visuals of hurling bombs. One of the posts warned that Panur comrades had not gone to Kashi, leaving the past behind. Similar threats, including alleged death threats, have been posted from multiple accounts.
The situation escalated further after the CPI(M) alleged that its memorial at Paratt was vandalised by the lndian Union Muslim League workers during a victory celebration. Social media posts threatened retaliation.
Based on reports of possible violence, the police led by senior officers have intensified surveillance in the area.
The present unrest began after CPI(M) workers allegedly barged into a victory procession by the United Democratic Front (UDF) after the UDF won the the Panur-Kunnothuparamba panchayat in the local body elections.
