The CSIR–National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR–NIIST) and Japanese firm Noritake Co. Ltd. have forged a partnership for advanced CO₂ capture technologies.
They have entered into a sponsored research agreement to “demonstrate advanced ceramic sorbents for high and intermediate-temperature carbon dioxide (CO₂) capture.” The collaboration marks a significant milestone in Indo–Japanese scientific cooperation aimed at addressing global decarbonization challenges, CSIR-NIIST said.
M/s Noritake Co. Ltd., a member of the Morimura Group and a leading firm in advanced ceramics and porcelain manufacturing, brings strong industrial expertise to this partnership, according to the CSIR-NIIST. “Through sustained collaborative research, the two institutions have successfully developed jointly patented ceramic sorbent formulations capable of capturing CO₂ from industrial point sources at elevated temperatures of 300–400°C, eliminating the need for cooling,” it said.
This technological breakthrough enables significant reductions in energy consumption and operational costs and has been achieved through optimized material synthesis and the incorporation of proprietary additives, making the process highly energy efficient and industrially viable.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formally exchanged by NIIST director C. Anandharamakrishnan and Erika Aoyama and Dr. G. M. Anilkumar from the R&D Centre of Noritake Co. Ltd. Dr. Anandharamakrishnan said the partnership gains added relevance in light of the Union government’s recent announcement of a ₹20,000 crore budgetary outlay to support initiatives in carbon capture and climate mitigation technologies.
