Chennai Customs officials recently seized 3.4 kg of hydroponic ganja worth ₹1.2 crore at Chennai airport.
A female passenger who arrived from Kuala Lumpur was held on September 26 when she attempted to exit the terminal via the green channel without making any declaration, according to a press release.
When her check-in baggage was examined, officials found four transparent airtight packets that had dried greenish brown flowering and fruiting tops of a plant. The officials suspected it to be high-grade hydroponically cultivated ganja. These packets were hidden within the false bottoms of the check-in baggage.
“The recovered contraband weighed 3,424 grams and tested positive for ganja/marijuana using the Narcotic Drug Detection Kit. The contraband was seized under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985,” the release said.
The passenger was arrested and remanded in judicial custody. Further investigations are on.
