District Employment and Career Guidance Centre – Madurai inaugurated a free coaching programme for competitive exams at Madurai Kamaraj University College here on Monday.
Organised by the District Employment and Career Guidance Centre, the programme aims to create awareness and provide structured orientation for students preparing for the TNPSC, UPSC, SSC, Railways and banking exams, helping them start training early during their degree courses rather than post-graduation.
Deputy Director of the District Employment and Career Guidance Centre – Madurai M. Kannan, speaking on the occasion, urged the college students to transform their casual desire for government jobs into a concrete target backed by disciplined preparation.
He added that success in government recruitment required more than marks and degrees. Emphasising the importance of mental discipline, clear goals and focused preparation, he explained the difference between college exams and competitive exams, noting that the latter are ‘truly competitive’ because candidates must score higher than thousands of others, not merely pass.
Mr. Kannan encouraged students to convert a casual desire for a government job into sustained interest, then a dream, and finally a concrete target supported by a daily study plan.
He advised them to begin preparation during their degree itself, rather than waiting until after graduation, and to make use of free coaching, annual exam calendars and guidance provided by the employment department.
Outlining a practical strategy, he asked students to first understand the syllabus, analyse previous years’ question papers and then follow an action plan with the right reference books.
He also highlighted the advantages of government service, including job security, pension, social respect and the opportunity ‘to give back to society’ by performing one’s duties sincerely.
The event was presided over by B. George, Principal (in charge), MKU College, who outlined the different dimensions of eligibility for employment, including educational qualifications, physical fitness, attitude and awareness of job opportunities in various sectors.
He urged students to clearly understand where jobs are available and to start planning their career paths while still in college.
The event also included an interactive session on exam techniques, managing distractions and building emotional strength for long‑term preparation.
