Cadres of the DMK on Thursday entered into heated argument with the police for granting permission to the TVK cadres to garland the statue of late E.V. Ramasamy on the occasion of his birth anniversary at Thirumanilaiyur roundabout.

According to sources, the DMK cadres, who assembled near the statue to pay their respect to the late leader, objected to the TVK cadres putting up their party flags around the statue, which was installed by the DMK in 2009.

The DMK men said the TVK cadres could garland the statue of the leader at Lighthouse roundabout. The DMK cadres also took objection to the police granting permission to the TVK cadres. They entered into heated arguments with the police, who told them that the statue was common for all. Subsequently, they allowed the TVK men to garland the statue. Former Minister M.R. Vijayabaskar and TVK district secretary V.P. Matthiazhagan were among those who garlanded the statue.

Later, the DMK flags were raised and the DMK men, including Aravakurichi MLA R. Ilango, paid their respect to E.V. Ramasamy. The crowd dispersed from the spot peacefully.
