Congress Working Committee (CWC) member N. Raghuveera Reddy on Thursday said widespread concern was being expressed across the country over the manner in which the Election Commission (EC) was functioning and the developments taking place in the name of revision of electoral rolls.
Speaking to the media in Vijayawada, Mr. Raghuveera Reddy said several questions raised by Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi regarding the electoral process and electoral rolls had gained significance in the light of recent reports.
Referring to a report published by a national daily, he said it brought to light the concerns regarding the functioning of the EC and the process of revision of electoral rolls. Various reports indicated that more than 13 crore names had been excluded from the draft electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process across the country, the Congress leader said.
However, as the EC had clarified that these should not be treated as final deletions and that the names were being examined as part of the ongoing process, Mr. Reddy stressed the need for complete transparency and disclosure of details relating to every such deletion.
Demanding that every eligible citizen be provided access to file claims and objections regarding the electoral rolls, Mr. Reddy said, in a democracy, people and political parties should have confidence in constitutional institutions such as the EC.
He demanded that complete data relating to the deletion, inclusion and correction of names in electoral rolls be made available to the public, both State-wise and Assembly Constituency-wise. He also urged that the details of voters reportedly excluded during the SIR process in Andhra Pradesh be made public and that steps be taken to restore the names of all eligible voters.
