The body of a 14-year-old boy, who drowned in the Cauvery while fishing near Thiruvaiyaru, was recovered on Sunday. Tragedy struck on Saturday when Girinath, 14, his grandfather Balakrishnan, 65, and younger brother Vignesh, 10, slipped into the river near the Kaduveli barrage.

Balakrishnan was found dead while Vignesh was rescued and admitted to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. Girinath had gone missing.

As search operations were hindered by heavy water flow, residents staged a brief road blockade on the Kaduveli main road demanding reduction of inflow. Following assurances by police officials, the protest was withdrawn, causing traffic disruption for about 30 minutes.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel later recovered Girinath’s body about 500 metres downstream. The bodies were handed over to the bereaved relatives after post-mortem at the Thiruvaiyaru Government Hospital.
