The Erode City Municipal Corporation has initiated steps to prepare detailed 2D and 3D maps of the entire corporation area using drones and modern surveying technology.
The project is aimed at improving urban planning, civic administration and infrastructure development by creating a comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS) database of the city.
Under the project, aerial surveys will be carried out using drones equipped with cameras and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology. The data collected will be used to prepare detailed maps of buildings, roads, bridges, water bodies, trees, open spaces and other important features in the city. The exercise will also help the Corporation create a digital database of properties and public utilities.
The information is expected to assist officials in planning infrastructure projects, monitoring civic assets and taking up development works based on accurate ground data. The initiative is part of efforts to strengthen e-governance and promote the use of GIS technology by urban local bodies.
A three-dimensional (3D) model of the city, covering buildings and other major structures, will also be prepared. The data will provide a common digital platform for various departments of the Corporation and support the implementation and monitoring of urban development schemes.
The Corporation has proposed engaging a qualified agency to undertake the aerial survey, data collection and preparation of the maps. The completed datasets and related information will be handed over to the Corporation for use in future planning and administration.
The project is expected to provide the civic body with an updated picture of the city’s physical infrastructure and help improve decision-making and service delivery. The Corporation has floated a tender for the project with October 6, 2026 as the deadline for online submission of documents.
