A farmer has alleged that untreated water from the Erode Corporation’s sewage treatment plant at Konavaikal was being discharged into a drain that eventually joins the Kalingarayan Canal.

P.K. Sethuraja, president of the Kalingarayan Farmers and Workers Welfare Association, made the allegation after officials of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board inspected the drain and the canal on Thursday (August 27, 2026). Mr. Sethuraja alleged that the Corporation had failed to treat the water properly and was allowing untreated water to flow into the drain leading to the canal. He had earlier warned that he would demolish structures facilitating the discharge of untreated water into the canal.

Demanding action against those responsible, Mr. Sethuraja alleged that the canal was being polluted by the Corporation. He also sought immediate measures to prevent the discharge of untreated water into the irrigation channel. The officials said they would take up the issue with the Corporation officials concerned before leaving the spot.

Mr. Sethuraja said farmers would stage a protest if the authorities failed to take action against the Corporation officials responsible for the alleged discharge.
