The Desiya Thennindhiya Nadigal Innaippu Vivasayigal Sangam has condemned the Union government for “failing to fulfil” its election promise of doubling farmers income.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, P. Ayyakannu, president of the association, said the minimum support price fixed by the Centre for various crops, including paddy and sugarcane, fell way below the promise of profitable prices.
He reiterated the association’s demand for sanction of ₹5,000 as pension to farmers above the age of 60, waiver of all crop and education loans and increasing employment opportunities.
Mr. Ayyakannu observed that a lion’s share of the outlay of the Agriculture Budget in Tamil Nadu went towards salaries and administrative expenses. The Budget outlay for the development of sector should be increased to ₹50,000 crore annually in theState, he said.
He urged the State government to sanction crop loans based on the certification of the village administrative officers and implement the crop insurance scheme by itself without handing it over to private agencies.
