With the onset of the Northeast monsoon, the civic authorities have stepped up preventive measures across the 100 wards in Madurai city.

Corporation Commissioner Gaurav Kumar and officials from the health department conducted a series of inspections at thickly populated wards on Wednesday.

According to the officials, fogging has been intensified twice a day. Each vehicle would cover eight kilometre radius daily.

Already, fever camps have been held and based on the previous cases, the officials had deployed a total of 1200 DBS workers across the 100 wards , who provided basic screening for the beneficiaries. They urged the people not to neglect fever and advised to reach out to the nearest UPHCs or any hospital.

The health officials said that they had cleared 13 metric tons of unused tyres from across the five zones from dwellings and other locations. Similarly, five tons of e-waste too had been cleared by the conservancy workers.

There are plans to visit schools and colleges in the coming days and conduct awareness camps. The officials said that residents have been sensitized to keep their surroundings clean and dry. Any carelessness, especially, in water logging, may lead to mosquito breeding and may result in unknown fever.

The doctors at the Urban Primary Health Centres appealed to the residents to drink boiled water and not to consume anything which are extremely cold in nature. Similarly, they advised the womenfolk to take utmost care with elderly people having respiratory issues and who had undergone cardiac related issues in the recent past.
