On occasion of 21st anniversary of 2004 tsunami , fishermen from the coastal hamlets of Kanniyakumari and Thoothukudi districts paid homage to those who lost their lives in the disastrous tsunami.
One of the most devastating tsunamis in history, triggered by a massive earthquake off the coast of Indonesia, impacted the eastern coast of Tamil Nadu, causing significant loss to life and property.
The disaster claimed the lives of around 7,000 people in Tamil Nadu, and of them over 800 people perished in Kanniyakumari district, one of the highest death tolls recorded in the state during the tsunami.
Silent processions and prayer meetings were held across coastal hamlets of the district including Keezha Manakudy, Kottilpadu, Colachel, Muttam and several others.
Kanniyakumari district collector R. Alagumeena paid her respects at the tsunami memorial symbol at Triveni sangamam in Kanniyakumari.
Marking the 21st anniversary, fishermen also organised a tribute event at Therespuram beach, where they offered flowers and lit candles in remembrance.
