Following the submission of the Centre’s report, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court disposed of two PIL petitions.

The Central government, in a status report submitted on Thursday, told the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that a full-fledged outpatient department (OPD) services at the OPD Block of AIIMS Madurai’s permanent campus would begin on January 1, 2027.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice C.V. Karthikeyan was told by the Centre that necessary arrangements to start the OPD services were being taken up.
The status report said on completion of the hostels and dining blocks on the AIIMS Madurai campus, shifting of all the five batches (2021 to 2025) of MBBS students from the temporary campus in Government Ramanathapuram Medical College and Hospital to the AIIMS Madurai campus was completed on August 31 in a phased manner.
All the students were residing in the hostels on the AIIMS campus and were attending the academic and clinical activities in Government Madurai Medical College and Hospital. The inception batch (2021) students were residing in the hostels on AIIMS campus and were undergoing Internship/House Surgeonship in Government Madurai Medical College and Hospital, it was submitted.
Taking note of the status report, the court closed the public interest litigation petition filed in 2021 by K. Pushpavanam of Madurai. The petitioner had said the AIIMS Madurai could function from a temporary campus till the construction of the main building was completed. He had also sought an outpatient department on the campus.
The court also disposed of another public interest litigation petition filed in 2024 by R.K. Basker of Madurai. The petitioner had sought a direction to the Union government to expedite the construction of AIIMS in Madurai.
