Urban Development Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah on Thursday asked the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to launch a drive to issue e-khata to properties.
Speaking while reviewing the projects and programmes of the corporation at a meeting, the Minister said that though the corporation has 2,22,256 properties, it has issued only 68,603 e-khats till September 16, 2026.
“This number is very low. All properties should be issued with an e-khata by taking up a drive,” he told the Commissioner of the civic body, Rahul Ratnam Pandey.
The Minister said the corporation should explore the best solid waste management practices adopted by other civic bodies and introduce the same in the city.
Referring to legacy waste management, the Commissioner told Dr. Yathindra that the work order for clearing the legacy waste at Pachchanady was issued on April 25, 2022. Of the total nine lakh tonnes of legacy waste, 1,68,354 tonnes have been scientifically processed, reclaiming 3.54 acres of land. The contractor has been granted an extension of the deadline for processing the remaining waste till December, 2026.
“The legacy waste should not grow,” the Minister said.
Dr. Yathindra asked the civic body to install more CCTV cameras across the city to monitor the dumping of waste at public places. A penalty should be imposed on such people, and garbage should be collected from people’s doorsteps properly, he said.
The Minister said the rent collection by the MCC from its assets is very low. He advised that it be increased.
He asked the MCC to completely digitise the administrative setup. “It is a shame that corporations like the MCC still lag in digitisation,” he said.
UGD infrastructure
Later, speaking to presspersons, he said that the MCC has sought about ₹1,250 crore to rebuild its old Underground Drainage (UGD) infrastructure in the city.
About 35% of the area under the MCC still does not have a UGD system. As the MCC has sought funds to start the work, an agenda would be tabled in the Cabinet meeting on Friday to sanction ₹350 crore for replacing the old UGD network and associated facilities. “I am hopeful that the Cabinet will pass it,” he said.
