The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has quashed the FIR registered by the Madurai police in 2023 against Hindu Munnani functionaries. They had staged a protest because Karthigai Deepam was not lit on Thirupparakundram hill.
Justice R. Vijayakumar said the Hindu Munnani functionaries had protested against the State government for not lighting Karthigai Deepam on Thirupparakundram hill. It cannot be considered to be a criminal offence, especially when no allegations had been made that they had caused inconvenience to the public or caused damage to the public property.
The continuation of the criminal proceedings against the accused persons would only be an abuse of the process of law, the court said and quashed the FIR registered against over 300 Hindu Munnani functionaries.
