Tourism has emerged as an important driver of economic growth, and greater efforts should be made to showcase the numerous tourist attractions in Kalyana Karnataka, said Central University of Karnataka (CUK) Registrar R.R. Biradar.
He was speaking at a ‘Heritage Walk’ organised at the Kalaburagi Fort premises in Kalaburagi on Friday to mark World Tourism Day. The programme was organised jointly by the Department of Tourism, Central University of Karnataka, and the Sharnbasva University to create awareness among the public about the historical heritage of the district.
Prof. Biradar said Kalyana Karnataka had around 65 historical tourist sites and stressed the need to develop and promote them in a manner that would attract more visitors and contribute to the region’s economic growth.
He said that maintaining tourist destinations and historical monuments in a clean condition was the responsibility of every visitor. “Tourists cannot be expected to visit places that are not clean. We must also remember our responsibility towards protecting the environment at such historical sites,” he said.
He said tourism was a rapidly growing sector with the potential to contribute significantly to economic development and create opportunities for local communities.
The heritage walk was flagged off at the Kalaburagi Fort by the Joint Director of Tourism, Baby Moger. Students visited the Jamia Masjid and the long cannon at the fort before proceeding on foot to Sri Sharanabasaveshwar Temple.
Shambhuling Vani of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage accompanied the students during the walk and explained the history and distinctive features of the fort and other heritage structures along the route.
Tourism officer Arun Kumar, CUK School of Business Studies dean Pandurang Patti, Head of the Department of Tourism and Hotel Management Mahendra G., professor Ankati Raghu, associate professor Gautham, KTF Kalaburagi’s Samuel Sandhyaraj, Head of the Tourism Department at Sharnbasva University Kalyan Rao Patil, ASI officer Nandakumar and other officials of the Tourism Department were among those present.
