The State Highways Department on Saturday deferred the demolition of a building that was acquired for construction of a road over bridge (ROB) across the level crossing on Cauvery Road near Town Railway Station in Tiruchi.

The exercise that was planned for Saturday was deferred after the occupants of the building sought two weeks to remove their belongings. Permission was granted by the district administration, sources said.

Construction of the flyover entailed the acquisition of about 5,612 square metres of private land. According to sources in the Highways Department, disbursement of compensation for the owners of the land acquired for the project had been completed.

The overbridge across the level crossing situated between Srirangam and Town Railway Stations on Tiruchi-Chennai Chord Line was sanctioned in August 2022. The ROB is to be built by the Highways Department and the Railways on a cost sharing basis. The State government granted administrative sanction for its construction at an estimate of ₹23.45 crore.

The Highways Department began construction of the approach road as part of the ROB in March 2025.
