A 58-year-old woman suffered injuries on her eyes when two persons, including a woman, sprayed chilli powder on her face and escaped with her five-sovereign gold chain.

Police said on Saturday that Pappa was living alone in Meenakshipuram in Vembakottai panchayat, after the death of her husband, a Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) of Police, a few months ago.

She had lost her milch animal three days ago. Learning about it, an unidentified woman and a youth came to her house claiming that the milch animal was spotted at a place.

Meanwhile, the woman asked Ms Pappa to fetch some water. When Ms Pappa went inside the house, the woman and her accomplice followed and assaulted her. When Ms Pappa attempted to raise an alarm, the duo pulled her gold chain and sprayed chilli powder they had carried with them on her face. Then, they fled the house.

After recovering from the shock, Ms. Pappa lodged a complaint with Vembakottai police. SI Palraj inspected the scene of crime and checked images recorded in the CCTV cameras in the area. Further investigation is on.
