“If the MLAs behave against legislature convention and troop into the well of the House, then I need to act as the Speaker to ensure that legislature business continues,” Assembly Speaker U.T .Khader said here on Wednesday.
Reacting to the criticism by MLAs from Dakshina Kannada that Mr. Khader did not take any action against the statement in the Assembly that the region’s MLAs always create trouble, Mr. Khader said MLAs from the Opposition party should have discussed about it and he would have taken action to remove such references from the legislature business.
Instead of discussion, the MLAs suddenly trooped into the well of the House, by keeping the Leader of the Opposition in the dark. “When they defy convention, then I need to act to ensure that legislature business goes on. There were three Bills for discussion. My action was to send out message to MLAs that actions contravening legislature conventions will not be accepted by the Speaker,” he said.
When pointed out at the criticism of his statement asking Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna to stop his “Hari kathe”, Mr. Khader said he would not like to comment on the deliberations that hadtaken place in the Legislative Assembly, outside the House. “This region of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi has seen illustrious Legislators. I want MLAs of the region to uphold the Legislative pride of the region,” he said.
Mr. Khader said the government had to take action to ensure that traditional “Koli Anka” (rooster fight) goes on. The proposed opening of units of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology in Mangaluru has to be approved by the government and funds should be sanctioned in the next Budget.
He will have discussion with officials and district In-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao to open the twin railway underbridges at Mahakalipadpu in Mangaluru, which serves as a vital link for those coming from Ullal to Mangaluru, for traffic, Mr. Khader added.
