The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) on Wednesday accused the university administration of “continued negligence” in maintaining basic infrastructure, alleging that a ceiling fan collapsed in a room in the university’s Tapti hostel on Tuesday night.
In a statement on Wednesday, the JNUSU said, “Last night, a ceiling fan collapsed in a room at Tapti Hostel. Fortunately, no students were present at the time, but this could easily have resulted in serious injury or death.”
“The decay is visible across the campus — in classrooms, in hostels with leaking ceilings, and crumbling walls, and even in spaces central to student life such as Teflas (JNUSU’s office). Despite repeated complaints, no serious repair or maintenance work has been undertaken. Along with this, we demand the structural audit of all hostels and buildings,” the statement added.
There was no immediate response from the JNU administration to the allegations.
