Karaikal administration shifts weekly market after rains; modernisation plan proposed

After incessant heavy rain left the weekly market ground on Thirunallar Road slushy and unhygienic, the Karaikal district administration has shifted the market to the Karaikal Regulated Marketing Committee premises and announced steps to modernise the facility to benefit traders and shoppers.

The weekly market is traditionally held at a municipal open ground on Thirunallar Road. However, with continuous rainfall in recent days, the area reportedly turned into a muddy stretch, making movement difficult for customers and affecting business. Residents and social activists urged the district administration to relocate the market temporarily to ensure safer and cleaner operations.

Acting on the request, and following directions from the district administration, the weekly market began functioning from Sunday at the regulated marketing yard, the officials said.

Karaikal Collector A.S.P.S. Ravi Prakash carried out an inspection of the market on Sunday morning. During the visit, he interacted with shopkeepers and members of the public and sought feedback on whether basic amenities had been provided and what additional facilities were required to improve the market environment.

The Collector took note of waste accumulation in parts of the yard and directed the municipal administration and H.R. Square, the sanitation service provider, to remove garbage immediately and ensure continuous upkeep.

Officials said the shift would be used as an opportunity to streamline market operations and plan upgrades such as improved cleanliness systems, designated vending zones, and better access for customers — measures aimed at creating a more organised weekly market and protecting traders from weather-related disruptions.
