Laudable initiative
The installation of CCTV cameras with advanced tracking facilities by Kanniyakumari district police at important locations in Nagercoil is a laudable initiative, to curb the crime in the district. This would enable faster and accurate tracking of miscreants and vehicles used for crime activities.

Water exploitation
The factories in Tirunelveli are drawing Thambirabharani river water worth crores of rupees for industrial purposes. However, despite an estimated payment of Rs 250 crores payable to the state government for the water drawn from the river, the factories continue to extract water without settling the dues. Moreover, the infrastructure project aimed at the betterment of the river is still pending. The government must initiate swift action to safeguard this perennial river for both the public and the farming community.

Pot hole ridden stretch
The condition of the entire stretch of the KP road in Nagercoil, especially near the Derik junction has become unmotorable, as one could see potholes at regular intervals in this road. So far, no concrete action has been taken to set right this road. At times, some patchworks were carried out to cover up the potholes. However, it appears that proper milling was not undertaken before filling them with gravel.
The worst part is these gravels get strewn across the road, posing a risk of hitting the pedestrians when vehicles pass at high speed. Persons driving two-wheelers also find their commuting dangerous. It is high time the concerned authorities must take necessary measures to restore this road.

Water leakage concern
At the T-junction on the Thoothukudi-Tiruchendur highway, opposite to TAC Nagar, persistent water leak resulted in constant water stagnation. This area is barricaded due to water accumulation, but the issue has already led to fewer accidents and altercations.
Patchwork repairs have not resolved the issue. It is suspected that water header line to Sterlite copper may be the source of the leak. If this is the case and the water header is no longer in service, it should be blocked at the upstream end and leaky pipe should be replaced. Concerned authorities must address this issue without further delay.

Confusion in senior citizens queue
At the Tiruchendur Subramanya Swamy temple, there was no information board explaining the procedure for the senior citizen queue, which added to the confusion in an already existing unclear situation. The senior citizens were given the option to be accompanied by a younger person. However, they are still forced to wait at least two and half hours for the darshan.
The main purpose for allowing an exclusive line for senior citizens is to reduce the waiting time, making the darshan a pleasant one. The authorities are requested to provide a necessary notice board with information regarding the age limit to enter the senior citizen queue.

Lack of bus shelters
There are no bus shelters in Ethankadu, Vazhukkamparai and Pottraiady, forcing the public to wait in scorching sun and on rainy days. The concerned authorities must take necessary action to build temporary bus shelters at these locations.

Worsening road condition
The monsoon rains have worsened the already damaged roads in Tirunelveli, especially in Tirunelveli junction starting from Periyar bus stand towards Madurai. The motorists and pedestrians are finding it difficult to navigate along the stretch, while the corporation authorities remain as silent spectators. Adding to that, the Ayyappa devotees from several locations stopped their vehicle at the south and east side of the bus stand to buy Tirunelveli halwa, although separate parking facilities are available.
The authorities concerned must take necessary action to address the issue.
