Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, Chennai, has launched SAMATVA, centre for obesity, metabolic health, and lifestyle management. Tamilisai Soundararajan, former Governor of Telangana, inaugurated the centre on Tuesday.

The centre will provide comprehensive care for people with obesity and related health problems through a multidisciplinary team of physicians, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, hepatologists, nutrition specialists and other health professionals.

The assessment will look at medical and metabolic health, nutrition, physical activity and lifestyle, and factors that may make it difficult for a person to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. The centre will also help identify and manage health problems associated with obesity.

According to the National Family Health Survey-6 (2023-24), 44.2% of women aged 15-49 in Tamil Nadu had weight-related health concerns. The centre said its approach would focus on identifying and managing related health risks, including diabetes, fatty liver disease, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease.

Piyush Bawane, clinical lead, Medical Gastroenterology, Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, said obesity could affect metabolic health and was often associated with several other health conditions. A comprehensive assessment could help identify these risks and guide treatment, he said.

Rameez Raja B., consultant, Endocrinology, , said obesity is a complex metabolic condition that could affect multiple organs, and a multidisciplinary assessment could help doctors understand the health needs of each person and decide on an appropriate treatment approach.
