A day after the declaration of the local body election results, the Kerala Congress (M) [KC(M)]on Sunday alleged that a deliberate misinformation campaign was being carried out against the party.
In a statement, KC(M) district president Lopes Mathew refuted allegations that the party had performed poorly in the local body elections. He cited the Pala Assembly constituency as an example and pointed out that across grama panchayats and municipal wards the United Democratic Front [UDF] secured 91 seats, while the Left Democratic Front [LDF] won 87 seats. In the Pala municipality, the KC(M) retained 10 of the 11 seats it had won in the previous election, losing just by a narrow margin, he said
The party at the same time also held on to key district panchayat divisions in the constituency, besides reclaiming the Kidangoor division, which covers panchayats such as Kozhuvanal, Mutholi and parts of Karoor. As a result, the party succeeded in winning seats in almost all segments of the Pala constituency across district panchayat, municipality and local bodies.
At the same time, the KC(M) district president acknowledged that the party’s overall seat tally declined from 208 in the previous local body polls to 152 this time.
Mr. Mathew also noted that while the LDF had improved its seat count compared to the last election and managed to reclaim seven panchayats from the UDF in Kottayam district, the BJP’s electoral gains effectively worked to the advantage of the UDF.
