Anticipating a spike in summer electricity demand, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has sought supply proposals from power generators for meeting the additional demand during the period from February to May 2026.

The power utility is eyeing a daily supply of 200 MW each in February, March, April and from May 1 to May 15. According to a request for proposal (RfP) floated by the KSEB on Tuesday, these short-term supplies are required for meeting the increased demand during the peak hours from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

All power generators, including State utilities, captive power generators, distribution licencees and State-run electricity boards possessing a valid trade licence, are qualified to participate in the bidding process which will take place through the Centre’s Discovery of Efficient Electricity Price (DEEP) portal.

The non-financial technical bids and initial public offerings are to be submitted by January 9.

In August, the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission had noted the KSEB’s repeated failure in furnishing details of the financial commitment arising from short-term power procurements and how they affect the KSEB’s finances.

During the 2025 summer, Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty had stressed the need to make the most of the daytime reduction in energy charges for select categories of consumers to keep evening consumption down.

The combined storage in the KSEB’s hydel reservoirs stood at 74% (or equivalent to 3051.8 million units (mu)on Tuesday. This is the highest for the day since 2021. Storage in the Idukki reservoir stands at 73%.
