Taking exception to Ganesha immersion processions becoming a sensitive social issue and a platform for political confrontation, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) spokesperson H.A. Venkatesh has sought an inquiry headed by a retired High Court judge into the controversies surrounding Ganeshotsav in the State.
The independent inquiry should examine statements by police officers, speeches by political leaders, circumstances surrounding protests, videos circulated on social media and the sources of rumours, Mr. Venkatesh said in a statement here on Sunday.
The inquiry should cover various controversies reported across the State, including the T. Narasipur incident, to establish the facts. Those found guilty, irrespective of their identity, should face action in accordance with the law, he said, while seeking clear guidelines for Ganeshotsav celebrations.

Referring to the incident, Mr. Venkatesh cited media reports that the police had issued precautionary instructions regarding certain activities, including bursting crackers in front of a mosque. BJP leaders opposed the remarks and staged a protest, turning the issue into a political confrontation, he said.
“Publicising only portions of a police officer’s statement without examining the complete context can create misconceptions and apprehension among people. Political leaders and public representatives should act with greater responsibility on matters concerning religious sentiments,” Mr. Venkatesh said.
He said former MP Pratap Simha’s public criticism of the police officer and his speech during the procession could undermine the morale of the police force. He urged the authorities to examine the complete videos of Mr. Simha’s statements and speeches by other leaders, police records and other relevant evidence and place the facts before the public.
