The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) on Tuesday said it successfully reduced wastage of treated drinking water and saved 18 million gallons per day (MGD) during maintenance of the Krishna drinking water supply network. This was possible by establishing an interconnection between the phase-I, phase-II and phase-III main pipelines at the Nasarlapally pumping station.

The new linkage system was put to use during a recent shutdown of the phase-II main pipeline. Of the nearly 23 MGD water available in the pipeline, around 18 MGD or 80% was diverted to the phase-III reservoir for public consumption. About 5 MGD had to be released through scouring.

Officials said the arrangement reduced the time required for scouring from nearly 20 hours to just eight hours, saving more than 12 hours of shutdown time. The shorter shutdown also resulted in an estimated saving of around ₹5 lakh in electricity costs.

During the shutdown, 48 air valves on the main pipeline were also replaced, with the works completed swiftly and water supply restored in a short period.

Officials said the 24-km Nasarlapally-Godakondla stretch has several ageing or inaccessible scouring arrangements. The board said it was considering similar linkage systems at Godakondla, Kodandapur and other suitable pumping stations to further reduce water losses during maintenance work.
