As part of the initiatives associated with the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign in the Union Territory, Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan on Monday inaugurated Aerobin-based on-site composting facility at the Central Prison, Kalapet in Puducherry.

The departments of local administration and prison have come together to install eight Aerobins for processing biodegradable waste generated inside the prison. Aerobin composting is a contained aerobic process in which segregated biodegradable waste undergoes natural decomposition through micro-organisms in the presence of adequate air and moisture.

Each Aerobin installed at the prison has the capacity to process 525 kg. The bins will be operated in rotation, enabling the biodegradable waste to undergo an approximately 45-day composting cycle and ensuring continuous processing of biodegradable waste throughout the year, said a LAD official.

“Through the initiative, we appeal to hotels, educational institutions, hospitals, hostels, residential establishments and all bulk waste generators to adopt similar practices by segregating waste at source and process waste at the site itself,” the official said.

During the visit, the Lt. Governor planted saplings at the Jail complex. Authorities also briefed the him about the vegetable cultivation carried out inside the prison.
