Mamata AITC leader Ajit Maity arrested on extortion charges

The West Bengal police on Friday (September 25, 2026) arrested Mamata All India Trinamool Congress leader Ajit Maity on charges of extortion. Mr. Maity was arrested by police personnel from Pingla police station on charges of taking money from a person named Gautam Das. According to the allegation made by Gautam Das, Mr. Maity had promised him a post in the party in return for the money.

Ajit Maity is associated with the Mamata Banerjee backed faction of Trinamool Congress. He was arrested from his residence in Kharagpur and taken to Debra police station. 

Before being taken to Debra police station, Mr. Maity said, “This arrest is for political reasons. I have faith in the police and administration.”

Ajit Maity won the Pingla constituency in the 2021 assembly elections. However, in 2026, he contested from the same constituency and lost to the BJP candidate. Ajit Maity is currently the vice-president of the Midnapore Zilla Parishad. He was the former president of the West Midnapore organizational district and later the Ghatal organizational district of the Trinamool Congress.

Several former MLAs of Trinamool Congress and leaders who are supporting Mamata Banerjee have been arrested after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) party came to power in May 2026. The charges against these leaders are violence, extortion, and intimidation. Leaders of the Trinamool Congress who have joined the rebel factions-both in the State Assembly and in the Lok Sabha have not faced any arrests, prompting Mamata Banerjee loyalist to say that the arrests are politically motivated.
