A 55-year-old man died after suffering an electric shock while attempting to retrieve a tool from a well at Koothampoondi near Appakudal in Erode district on Saturday morning (September 19, 2026).
The deceased was identified as M. Kunjupaiyan alias Sengottaiyan of Koothampoondi.
According to the police, Mr. Sengottaiyan had been engaged in desilting the well at a farm for the past week. After completing his work on Friday evening (September 18, 2026), he left a spade inside the well and returned home. On Saturday, as water had started flowing into the well, he went there around 9.30 a.m. to retrieve the tool.
He was lowered into the well using a crane. He reportedly stepped into the water without noticing that an electrical wire connected to the well motor had come into contact with the water. He suffered an electric shock and drowned.
The well, jointly owned by E.K. Subramani, 70, and Gnanambal, 75, is about 35 to 40 feet deep. The Appakudal police visited the spot, retrieved the body and sent it to the Government Erode Medical College Hospital, Perundurai, for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered and further investigation is under way.
