The District Sessions Court in Nagapattinam on Wednesday sentenced a 59-year-old man to double life imprisonment and 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 25-year-old woman with intellectual disability in 2023.
The court imposed a fine of ₹25,000 on the convict, identified as V. Singaravelu, 59, of Kuravapulam.
According to the police, Singaravelu sexually assaulted the woman when she was alone in an agricultural field where she was working as a daily wage labourer.
Based on a complaint, the Vedaranyam All Women Police registered a case under Section 376(2)(l) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 3(1)(w)(i)(ii) read with 3(2)(v) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 2015. He was subsequently arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
