A 44-year-old tribesman was trampled to death by a wild elephant near Karamadai in Coimbatore district early on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as R. Sivakumar, a resident of Baralikadu tribal settlement near Pilloor.
Forest Department officials said Sivakumar had an accidental encounter with a wild elephant that entered the tribal settlement in the early hours of Tuesday. The elephant trampled him, and he died around 1.30 a.m.
Field staff of the Department rushed to the spot, which falls under Pilloor forest beat of Karamadai range, after being alerted about the incident. They in turn alerted 108 ambulance services and the Karamadai police. The body was shifted to the Government Hospital, Mettupalayam., for post-mortem
The Department deployed frontline staff to monitor the movement of the elephant further.
