The ‘Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam’, a one-gram gold ring provided for newborn babies delivered in government hospitals, was launched at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Monday.

As many as 2,647 children born in government hospitals and government primary health centres in Coimbatore district between June 22 and September 27 will receive one-gram gold rings under the ‘Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam’.
The scheme was launched by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at the Rajaji Government Hospital in Madurai on Monday. Following the State-level launch, Backward Classes Welfare Minister V. Sampath Kumar presented the rings to children at an event held at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Rings were presented to 25 children born at each of the four government hospitals — the CMCH, Government District Headquarters Hospital, Pollachi; Government Hospital, Mettupalayam; and Government Hospital, Valparai.
Of the 2,647 children, 1,713 were born at the CMCH, 599 at the Government District Headquarters Hospital, Pollachi, 305 at the Government Hospital, Mettupalayam and 30 at the Government Hospital, Valparai.
Five teams have been formed to distribute the rings to the beneficiaries. Each team comprises a Block Medical Officer, Medical Officer, Community Health Nurse, Sector Health Nurse and Village/Urban Health Nurse. The teams will distribute the rings to the remaining beneficiaries on a daily basis.
From September 28, children born at government hospitals and government primary health centres in the district will receive the gold ring at the respective facility on the day the mother is discharged after delivery.
Mr. Sampath Kumar said that when Mr. Vijay was an actor, his fan clubs had spent their own money on various welfare activities, including providing gold rings to children on his birthday. The scheme now provided an opportunity to extend such benefits to children on a larger scale.
On arrangements for Chief Minister’s campaign in Dharapuram on September 30 for the Assembly bypoll, Mr. Sampath Kumar said all security and protocol arrangements had been made. Steps had also been taken to ensure the safety of people attending the campaign.
On speeches by DMK leaders, including Udhayanidhi Stalin, Mr. Sampath Kumar said political leaders should focus on seeking votes rather than making personal remarks. People had been observing the developments and would respond through the election, he said.
District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar, Sulur MLA N.M. Sukumar, Additional Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine Jerard Maria Selvam, CMCH Dean Geethanjali and other officials were present.
