Several key facilities at the Kottayam Medical College Hospital, including the surgical block, paramedical hostel, cath lab, biogas plant, renovated outpatient department and a lactation unit, are ready for inauguration, Medical College Superintendent T. K. Jayakumar has said.
The superintendent informed this at a meeting convened by Ports Minister V. N. Vasavan on Saturday to review the progress of various construction works under way at the hospital. The meeting, held at the Medical College Conference Hall, was attended online by Health and Women and Child Development Minister Veena George, Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Rajan Khobragade and Director of Medical Education K. V. Vishwanathan.
Construction of the cardiology block and the surgical block, both included under the KIIFB project, has been completed. In addition to the existing seven operation theatres, seven more have now been made fully functional.
Addressing the meeting, Health Minister Veena George directed officials to examine the possibility of imposing penalties on the contractor for failing to complete the construction of the super-speciality block within the stipulated timeframe.
The Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department (Buildings) informed the meeting that construction of the building for the infectious diseases treatment department has reached 60% completion and is expected to be completed by February.
The Health Minister also instructed that steps be expedited to demolish the EFG block, which has remained unused for a long period.
Mr. Vasavan directed that a special meeting be convened involving the Electricity Minister and KIIFB representatives to discuss the construction of a 110 kV substation to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the hospital.
