Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner and Mangaluru City Corporation Administrator H V Darshan said more Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation buses will operate on city routes after route rationalisation.

Routes in Mangaluru city will be rationalised to allow operation of more KSRTC buses. As many as 50 electric buses of the KSRTC will be operating in Mangaluru city from May 2026, said Deputy Commissioner and Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Administrator H.V. Darshan during a phone-in programme at the MCC head office in Mangaluru on Thursday.
Answering the grievance of Ramoji Rao from Krishna Nagar that a private bus operator had cut bus services at 6.10 a.m. and 7.30 p.m., Mr. Darshan said routes in the city were being rationalised to allow more KSRTC buses to operate. The government has sanctioned 100 electric KSRTC buses to the city. These buses will be operating shortly, Mr. Darshan told the caller.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Darshan said 50 of the 100 buses will start operation from May, 2026. To start with, these electric buses will operate from the KSRTC bus depot. Space has been identified in Mudipu to set up a separate depot for electric buses. There was no shortage of manpower. As students and women were demanding KSRTC buses, more buses will operate on city routes.
Mr. Darshan said the District Road Transport Authority will shortly take a decision on whether to continue or not with the District Magistrate notification of 1997 restricting entry of more buses to Hampankatta.
On creation of a dog pound for stray dogs, as per directions of the Supreme Court, Mr. Darshan said action was being taken to have a pound each for Mangaluru North and Mangaluru South regions. A dog pound each will come up in Ullal and Mulky too. The State government has directed the city corporation and other urban local bodies to set up dog pounds. A 12-acre land has been identified in Bondantilla for a dog pound for Mangaluru city, he said.
To a call from a Kottara Chowki resident about the need to regulate speed of city buses, Mr. Darshan said action will be taken to enforce the law to prevent the speeding of city buses.
When a maidservant called Mr. Darshan to seek help in getting refund of the fees she paid to one nursing college and pay the fees in another nursing college where her daughter got admission, the DC asked his office to get in touch with the caller and address her problem.
